If I'm not blogging, you can count on the fact that I'm working. And lately I've been working a lot. Here's a quick update:
- Over the past few months I've been working on three (count 'em) feature documentaries. The first one takes a look at a phenomenon known as Christian Zionism, the second is about energy, and the third is about human trafficking. The Christian Zionism doc is scheduled to come out later this year and the other two in 2010.
- Earlier this spring I was hired to do a rewrite on a gritty, low budget indie. That two-week job stretched into a couple of months. Now we're in the process of casting, with plans to shoot the film in August. I'm pretty excited about this project, particularly b/c its going to be directed by my good friend Nathan Frankowski. It'll be his first time helming a dramatic feature. I'll release some casting news and other details as soon as we have things locked down. And hopefully Nathan will see fit to give me a small role so that all of the acting chops I picked up playing Lex Luthor on Smallville earlier this year don't go to waste.
- "Her Gates Will Never Be Shut" is a new book on hell written by my friend Brad Jersak. I had the pleasure of editing this book over the past several months. Now it's at the publisher's and should be coming out in early 2010. All I can say is, this book will challenge everything you think you know about hell. It certainly did that for me.
- I've also been teaching a fair amount lately. This spring I spent a week in Kona, HI teaching at the University of the Nations' School of Digital Filmmaking. In mid-July I'm going to be teaching at a filmmaking boot camp for high school students in Vancouver. Then it's down to Tyler, Texas to teach for a week at the Woodcrest School of Writing. I'll be returning there later in the summer as well for a follow-up session.
- On top of it all, over the past six months I've been developing a new Hawaii-based spec with David L. Cunningham, who directed my first film (After...) and Hakani.
All that and my family and I are are somehow going to squeeze in a week of vacation at the end of this month (and maybe another week in mid-August). Meanwhile, I have a stack of scripts to read, people to get back to, and a half-built shed in my backyard. So unfortunately, blogging will continue to be hit and miss.
