A lot of people assume that self-employed people like me pretty much spend most of our time surfing the Internet in our pajamas. The truth is, I keep painfully regular hours in my home office, working from 8:30-4:30 each day with no coffee breaks and only half an hour off for lunch. I know it doesn't sound like much fun, but I love it.
Even so, every once in a while I just have to exercise some of the freedom that self-employment supposedly gives you. That's exactly what I did today. My friend Rob and his family are visiting from New Zealand, so some friends and I took him hiking up in the snow near the summit of the Coquihalla highway. It was an amazing day--warm, sunny, and good company all around. We even got to witness several avalanches as we sat on a huge slab of warm rock eating lunch.
Lord willing, this will be the first of several such trips over the next four months. I spent most of last summer knocking around Europe and the US on a film shoot. This summer I plan to stay home and explore the incredible world in my own backyard. So yeah, self-employment isn't all fun and games, but when it is, it can't be beat.
