I know, I'm probably the one Googlienth person to write a headline like that, but for most small-time bloggers like me, it's completely true. At least so far.
A few days back, I decided to see if I could monetize my blog through Six Apart's Adify program. Adify is simple enough to use. But I didn't like the look of their ads, and I didn't appreciate the fact that I had to apply to their various advertising networks to see if they deem my blog worthy for their campaigns.
For example, today I got turned down by a hockey advertising network. A hockey advertising network! Their reason? I don't blog about hockey! Did it ever occur to them that I'm Canadian, and that even though I don't blog about hockey perhaps many of my readers (probably the majority) are hockey fans? Apparently not. Humph.
Hockey or not, after comparing my options, I decided to ditch Adify and go with Adsense. Not only is it easier to use, I can customize the look of my ads, I don't have to apply to join any ad network and the ads appear on my blog as soon as I post the code. The only downside to Adsense so far is that the ads don't open in a new window when people click on them, but perhaps they'll provide that option in time.
But the proof is in the pudding, or in this case, my Paypal account. The great monetizing experiment is now officially up and running. I'll let you know how it goes.
